Whether we are waking up early to knock out work before the day even begins or pushing ourselves late into the night to finish one more task before we go to bed, we are all just trying to be successful.
If you do a simple Google search to look up the definition of success, you get a couple of options:
- The accomplishment of an aim or purpose.
- The attainment of popularity or profit.
- A person or thing that achieves desired aims or attains prosperity.
I don’t know about you, but the younger version of me use to hear the word “success” and I immediately thought of money. I would imagine all the tangible things money could buy and how all those things would bring me happiness. Growing up, we were often taught that the amount of money you had determined your level of success in life. But is that true?
Today, while money is still a perceived measure of success, it is now frequently measured by our level of popularity, especially on social media. The number of people that follow you and the number of likes and comments you get on social media posts are all viewed as a measure of your success. But is it really a measure of success when many people and businesses commonly pay for likes or even entice people to like or comment on their posts in order to win giveaways?
To further our perception of what success truly is, we look to the “influencers” on social media. They have a ton of followers, thousands of likes and comments on all their posts, and are always sharing the most perfect content. Dreamy homes with the perfect home decor. Trendy outfits and perfect hair and make-up. They look like they have it all together. Who wouldn’t want that?
Guys, I fall into the trap of seeing these ideas of success and wanting them too. But are we being honest with ourselves? Are our definitions of success really the success we want and need?
Let me take a moment to say, these people with a huge following on social media, the dreamy houses, the trendy outfits, perfect hair and make-up, and money to buy all the tangible things, they deserve all of it. Many of them worked really hard to be where they are. They deserve their success because of the hard work that they put in each and every day.
But I am writing this to tell you: You don’t have to have a lot of money to be successful. You don’t have to have the huge following on social media or the prettiest house with the trendy outfit and perfect hair and make-up. You can find success in the here and now. You just have to look for success differently than what society has taught us.
Ask yourself, “What have I always wanted?”
Growing up, I always dreamed of having a family. I wondered who I would marry and what my kids' names would be. Along with a family, my goal financially was to not live paycheck to paycheck. I also always wanted to design a planner. I’m not sure how that desire became a thing, but it did.
Many of my wants, I have accomplished, but there are still things I want to do. What about your wants? Have you accomplished some of the things you have always wanted to do too? What is still on your list that you want to do?
One of my favorite things about us as humans is our natural desire to constantly strive to be and do better. We are continuously pushing ourselves to grow and learn new things so that we can be the best version of ourselves. We work so hard day after day that sometimes we forget to enjoy our accomplishments and success that we have already obtained. We get sucked into comparing our journey to others who look successful, and we begin to feel like we are failing. But are we?
Take a moment to reflect on all the milestones that led you to where you are today. Your accomplishments. Your failures. They are your journey. Your journey in life is as unique as you are. When you compare your journey to someone else’s journey, you are robbing yourself of the happiness you have worked so hard for.
True success is happiness. It is what we are all working so hard for, and it can be found in the here and now. It is in the pride of your past accomplishments, in the progress of what you are working on now, and in your excitement of future accomplishments. Your journey can be just as successful as someone else’s journey as long as you keep working toward your goals: the things that will bring YOU happiness.
The pursuit of success or happiness is endless because once again, we as humans are always striving to be and do better for ourselves. But make sure to slow down and enjoy the journey. Find success in the here and now. You deserve it.
So, do what makes you happy and what makes you feel good. Follow your heart’s desire and make the world a better place. But whatever you do, don’t let your own self-doubts or others keep you from the happiness you deserve.
Anyone can be successful.
